Documentary photography generally refers to a form of photography used to chronicle significant and historical events.  The photographer typically attempts to capture honest and objective candid photographs designed to preserve specific information for current and future generations.

The term "documentary" does not refer to specific subject matter but rather to a specific approach that directly incorporates intent.  In fact, intent, purpose and style comprise the foundation upon which all documentary projects are built.  Stated otherwise, documentary photography does not involve simply taking random photographs during unspecified periods of time with no specific purpose with hope of later trying to organize photographs into some meaningful final product.
