Process for Personal Documentary Photography

My approach to personal documentary photography is exactly the same as with any major, long-term documentary project intended to result in a photo book or museum/gallery exhibit.  The only difference is the focus, which will be established by the individual client without concern for the degree to which the general public may be interested in the project.  The simple goal is to create historical records that document individuals being themselves at specific points in time, on specific occasions and/or during specific events.  Examples of opportunities for personal documentary projects are:

  • Activities involving family, friends, and/or colleagues;
  • Activities related to "special" occasioins, including birthdays, anniversaries, etc.;
  • Career/occupational activities, including trade shows, presentations, etc.;
  • School/educational activities, including band, drama or athletic practices and events;
  • Community activities, including fairs, festivals, parades, etc.
  • Recreational, leisure and hobby-related activities, including golf, tennis, fishing, etc.;
  • Church/spiritual activies, including festivals, picnics, special services, etc.;
  • Health/fitness activities, including running, swimming, biking, yoga, etc.;
  • General life-style activities, including "A Day in the Life" type projects; and,
  • Organizational activities for businesses and non-profit organizations, including "action" photos to display inside office/store spaces or on the internet to stimulate customer/client interests.
